Ten million American suffer from TMJ pain. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joints, the two small hinge joints that connect the lower jaw to the skull. When the TMJs are out of alignment, a person may experience these and other symptoms:
- Clicking or popping jaw joints
- Inability to fully open or close the mouth
- Pain in the head, neck, face, and/or jaw
- Chronic earaches, headaches, and/or migraines
- Tingling hands and arms
- Teeth grinding and jaw clenching (bruxism)
- Tooth wear from bruxism
You see, even slight misalignment of the TMJs can irritate nerves and muscles in the jaw area, thus the symptoms. The condition is called TMJ disorder, TMJ dysfunction, or TMD. Our dentists can evaluate your jaw joints and discuss your symptoms to determine if you suffer from TMJ disorder.
Many patients can find relief with minimally invasive splint therapy. We’ll create an oral appliance to keep your jaws aligned while you sleep. The nightguard will also prevent bruxism. Your muscles may "reprogram" to hold your jaw in proper position all the time, though some patients must wear their nightguard indefinitely. If your TMJ disorder is more serious, we may refer you to a specialist.
