Checkups & Cleanings

Dental checkups and cleanings are necessary for good dental health. Dr. Chris Martin and the entire professional dental team of Contemporary Dental Care of Mt. Vernon are equipped to meet your routine dental care needs. Regular checkups and dental cleanings are the most convenient ways to build a foundation of healthy dental habits.

Why are Routine Dental Checkups and Cleanings Important?

In addition to helping your teeth look their best through cleaning, each dental checkup provides numerous health benefits. Thoroughly examining the teeth, gums, tongue and surrounding structures provides a wealth of health information. An oral health checkup can reveal early dental decay, gum disease, and sometimes even oral cancer.

Children as young as two should visit the dentist, and by age four or five, a child should attend regular checkups.

What Can I Expect During a Dental Checkup?

Since your dental checkup is dedicated to your health, you determine the pacing and general mood of the appointment. In order to gain a comprehensive portrait of your dental health during your checkup, your dental team will:

  • Assess the texture, color, and general condition of your teeth, gums, and surrounding areas.
  • Evaluate childhood or adolescent development of the jaw and other oral structures.
  • Take dental x-rays.
  • Thoroughly yet gently clean your teeth.

The dentist will also look at each tooth in your mouth to assess problems like tooth decay or cracks, as well as old dental work. Sometimes old dental work wears out and needs to be replaced. We will be happy to replace metal fillings, inlays, onlays, and crowns with tooth-colored alternatives.

Throughout your visit, always ask whatever questions you need answering to fully understand your dental health, any recommended procedures, and your home dental care regimen.
