Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Wisdom teeth often begin to develop and come in between the ages of 17 and 25. Unfortunately, most people do not have enough room in their mouth to accommodate the large molars that are trying to erupt through the gums. This is made even more apparent when a patient goes through extensive orthodontic work that allows for very little space within the mouth for the wisdom teeth to come in. Because of this, it is often recommended to have your wisdom teeth removed as soon as feasibly possible.

When is it Time to Have Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

It is recommended to have your wisdom teeth removed as soon as they are detected on an x-ray, especially since this is when they are their smallest and easiest to remove. The longer you wait to have wisdom teeth taken out, the bigger the teeth become and the longer the roots are. This can then affect important nerves in the face that could create problems if they are cut or touched. For this reason, older patients coming in to have their wisdom teeth removed will often be advised to do so on an as-needed basis to prevent complications.

Reasons to Have Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

The dentist can help to determine if and when you should have your wisdom teeth removed. Some of the reasons to have your wisdom teeth removed include:

  • Avoid future problems with infection and pain
  • Avoid issues with overcrowding and misalignment
  • Avoid surrounding teeth cracking and breaking to make room for the wisdom teeth
